PSG Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Super Cup in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net early on.

However, Marseille struck two times late to take a shock advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the dying moments to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last thirteen years.
