The artist has given the full amount of his £25,000 honor prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to protect the United Kingdom's grassroots music venues.

Fender was awarded the award on 16 October as his third album People Watching was named the best record of the past year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the essential function small stages had in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their ticket costs, which benefits independent venues.

Fender also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

These funds assisted locations that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties stemming from flooding, fires and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained financial assistance in improving facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from shows in large arenas supports the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

And 1994 winners the group gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

Last week, the trust announced it had protected several grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in that location were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
