The Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Because my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we got some food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
